Barrards was the home of Catherine Maria Cautley, an elderly spinster, whose sister Arabella Tattersall is commemorated in a window in All Saints Church. It is not apparent why she is described here as "daughter" - there is no sign in the records of her family living in Chelsworth, unless an 1844 entry in the marriage register of one Francis Cattley, a 44-year-old widower, is connected.

She was described in 1871 as a "landed proprietor" and we know that she owned some lands as well as The Cottage in Parsonage Lane, and perhaps much other property besides. She left her real estate to her brother George Spencer Cautley, the rector of a parish in nearby Essex, and money to the widow of her brother Sir Proby Cautley.  She also gave legacies of money to her old servant Sarah Spinks, and to various members of the Pocklington family, to whom she was evidently close.

She was born in Raydon, and died in 1878 aged 75. Her body is buried among the Pocklington graves in the churchyard.

Barrards was owned by the Pocklington family, and before Miss Cautley, the house was occupied by a widow, Ann Cullum, who was the aunt of Lady Catherine Frances Pocklington, wife of Sir Robert.
