William and Sophia Strutt were incomers from Layham, where their three
children were born. William, a farmer, was originally from Hadleigh,
where he was born in 1810, the son of William and Alice. His wife, nine years
younger, was from Hitcham.
William died in 1887, and his body lies in a vault
on the South side of Lindsey parish church. The epitaph proudly states that he
was "formerly of Overbury Hall".
William junior left East Anglia and by 1881 he was
in Rivington, Lancashire, a "retired farmer" at the age of 40.
This entry originally showed, in pencil, the names
of Frederick Gage and his family; whether this
was just an error, or a record that the Gages did once live here, we do not
know.
