Henry and Giuliana Pocklington and their son Evelyn lived here
from time to time, but evidently not at the time of the survey.
(George) Henry had inherited the estate, as well as
the Lordship of the Manor, from his bachelor cousin Marton upon the latter’s death
in 1865, but being a serving Army officer he was not currently in
residence. His younger brother Frederic
was also a serving officer but was stationed about this time at Colchester and
so was a frequent visitor to his home and family at The
Old Manor.
The Hall was let to Lt. Col. Fenwick B. Barron
of the 3rd Dragoon Guards, and his wife Henrietta. Both originated
in London and we know no more about them.
Also at the Hall - but unnamed in the survey - were
five servants, including a butler, a page and a coachman, most of them from the
local area, but none from Chelsworth itself.
