William Raynham was a farmer with 80 acres and employing 4
men, according to the census. He was the son of Hester and James, also a
farmer.
Although William had been left a grander house - the
former home of Sir William Spring and his son John - which stood on or close to
the site of the village hall, he lived here in the house inherited from his
older brother James who died in 1815, unmarried and intestate, at the age of
31. It is not clear when the old Spring
house was demolished.
William and
his wife Mary Eleanor from Monks Eleigh had 13 children, one of whom - Alice -
was William’s housekeeper in 1871. She died two years later aged 39.
Tombstones in All Saints churchyard commemorate:
William who died 27 Sept 1873 aged 88;
His wife Mary Eleanor 1864 aged 72;
and their children
Alice (1834-1873)
Alfred (1830-1862)
