Up in the new poorhouse on the Lindsey road (built
in the 1840s to replace the almshouse near the centre of the village) lived James and Sarah
Harvey with their youngest daughter Rebecca.
Sarah was from Little Clacton, Essex, but her
maiden name was Herbert and she may have been related to Peter Herbert of Church View who was from Stratford St Mary on the
Suffolk/Essex border. James and Sarah were married in 1838, and had three
children christened in Chelsworth in the early 1840s, plus four more christened
elsewhere, though apparently born in the village.
James (1815-1880) was born in Nedging, the
brother of Jacob the elder, and so the uncle of Jacob at Mouses
and Robert at "Listers". His parents were
James (1781-1859) and Ann Maria (née Gosling), who came from
Hitcham and Naughton respectively. He worked as a farm labourer.
