Smith Gage was the son of Martin and Sarah. He was the widowed husband of Mary of
Monks Eleigh (who died in 1866 aged 77), and father of nine children including
Sarah (who married blacksmith Samuel Tampion from Naughton, and whose father
Thomas once worked the smithy beside The Old Forge) and Louisa, who married
Clement Poole and lived in The Summer House. In his will proved in 1878, Smith gage
expressed particular concern that his son Martin should be given a good
apprenticeship, though in fact the lad had died in 1868.
Elizabeth died in 1896 and Richard in 1899. Both the
latter were unmarried. In his will,
Richard made bequests to his cousin Miranda and to the children of her brothers
Frederick and Edward Gage, whose father William of Weavers
was Smith Gage's brother.
All three above are buried in the churchyard, and
tombstones record their last resting places.
