Robert and Margaret Pallant lived in this cottage, behind the old cottage called "Marshes". Robert was from Hitcham, a carpenter, born in 1825; and Margaret was baptised in Chelsworth in 1824, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Raynham of Riverside.

They died a few years apart, Robert in 1873 aged 48, and Margaret in 1876 aged 52. They had just this one son John, born in 1854, who became a carpenter too.
