Clement Poole lived in the carpenter’s house behind The Peacock
with his wife Louisa, the daughter of Smith Gage
of The Granary. Clement was from Acton,
the son of Thomas Poole, a bricklayer, and he had been apprenticed to Louisa’s
uncle Peter Gage. They were married in 1856.
The couple must have spent some time in London, as
one of their three daughters was born in Newington in 1860.
Clement Poole was clearly a trusted and respected
member of the Chelsworth community, appearing in a number of wills as executor,
trustee or witness even when there was no family connection.
Both Louisa and Clement lived well into old age,
Louisa dying in 1918 at 95 years of age, and Clement a year later aged 91.
Their tombstones spell out the sad accounts of their last years. Their little
daughter Kate is also buried in the churchyard.
