Here lived John Brown,
father of William, John
and Hannah Poulson. He was now a widower, his wife Susan
(Finch), whom he married in 1826, having died in 1861.
Although he is consistently shown as having been
born in Chelsworth, there is no record of his christening here, so his parents’
names are not known for sure. It seems probable, however, that he was one of
the seven children of Thomas (1770-1827) and Hannah (née Griggs) who lived
1769-1821. They married in 1789.
John
died in 1874 aged 74.

We have more examples here of the careless errors in
this survey. John Smith’s wife was Ann (Walker), whom he married in
1840. He was a labourer from Wetherden and his wife was from Lavenham.
We know nothing of any children they may have had
before coming to Chelsworth, and it would be interesting to know how they came
to be here.
Ann died in 1882, aged 62, and John later moved to
Hadleigh, where he died in 1890 at the age of 75.
(As in several other instances, the ages quoted in the survey do not tally with those recorded elsewhere - in this case on their tombstones.)
